Youth Essentials Series LESSON 0 What Must I Do to Be Saved?

This foundational lesson answers the most important question a person can ask. We walk through the biblical steps of salvation exactly as taught in Acts 2:37–47, showing how to respond to the gospel in obedience to Christ.

Lesson Content Listen THE BIG IDEA HOW THIS STUDY TEACHES YOU

"So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading." — Nehemiah 8:8

"Do you understand what you are reading?" — Acts 8:30

"He who has ears to hear, let him hear!" — Luke 8:8

Before Philip could explain Isaiah to the Ethiopian, he had to ask one honest question: do you understand what you are reading? This lesson asks the same question — not about a Bible passage yet, but about something more fundamental: do you understand how your own mind works, and where your understanding of truth actually comes from?

Introduction — Why This Lesson Comes First

Have you ever argued with someone and thought: how do they not see this? It is so obvious. It is just common sense. And then they looked back at you thinking the exact same thing about their position. Both of you were certain. Both of you felt like the answer was obvious. And both of you were completely convinced the other one was missing something basic.

Here is the question that most people never stop to ask: where did your common sense come from? Not just the position you are defending. The sense itself — the feeling that something is obvious, that something is just true, that your understanding of reality is the accurate one. Where did that come from?

The honest answer is: you learned it. Every belief you currently hold, every value you currently live by, every standard you currently use to evaluate truth — all of it was taught to you or absorbed by you from the environment around you. You were not born with any of it. You arrived with the capacity to learn, and then the world started filling that capacity with data. And whatever data filled you up first became what you call common sense.

This matters enormously for what comes next in this series. Because if the data that formed your common sense was inconsistent, or contradictory, or simply not the Word of God — then your common sense about spiritual things may be pointing you in the wrong direction with complete confidence. And that is a problem worth solving before we open a single passage together. Philip's first question to the Ethiopian was not what do you believe — it was do you understand what you are reading? This lesson asks the same thing, one step earlier: do you understand how you came to believe what you currently believe?

Part 1 — Reading the Scripture

ROMANS 10:17 (NKJV)

"So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

EPHESIANS 4:4–6 (NKJV)

"There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all."

MATTHEW 15:8–9 (NKJV)

"These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men."

2 Timothy 3:16–17 (NKJV) "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."

PROVERBS 14:12 (NKJV)

"There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death."

🌊 DEEP WATER — STOP AND BE HONEST

Be honest with yourself right now. Did your biggest beliefs about God, salvation, baptism, and the church come from a careful, personal study of the Bible itself — or did you pick them up from the people around you, the church you grew up in, or the culture you were raised in? If you had been born in a different family, in a different country, with different teachers — would your common sense about spiritual things be telling you something completely different right now? What does your honest answer tell you about the source of your current understanding?

Part 2 — Giving the Sense Where Common Sense Actually Comes From

Think about how a mind works. You are born with the hardware — the brain, the capacity to learn, the ability to reason and feel and process information. But the values, the beliefs, the standards of truth, the sense of what is obvious and what is not — none of that came installed. All of it was loaded in over time, by the people who raised you, the communities that shaped you, the media that surrounded you, and the experiences that marked you.

Every person walking the earth has a version of common sense that was built the same way. The person raised in a household that took the Bible seriously has a different common sense about spiritual things than the person raised in a household where religion was dismissed. The person who grew up attending a congregation that baptized infants has a different common sense about baptism than the person whose family never discussed it. The person whose entire social world told them that all paths lead to God has a different common sense about salvation than the person who was taught from childhood that the gospel requires a specific response.

None of these people invented their positions. They received them. And most of them have never stopped to examine whether what they received was actually accurate — because common sense, by its nature, feels too obvious to question. That is exactly what makes it potentially dangerous when the data that formed it was wrong.

KEY TRUTH

Common sense is not a natural instinct. It is a learned response built from accumulated input. What feels most obvious to you about God, salvation, and truth reflects what you were taught — not necessarily what is actually true. Proverbs 14:12 warns that there is a way that seems right to a man, and its end is the way of death. The feeling of certainty is not the same as accuracy.

The Formula for Confusion — Romans 10:17

ROMANS 10:17 ESTABLISHES THE ONLY RELIABLE FORMULA FOR ARRIVING AT GENUINE FAITH: FAITH COMES BY HEARING, AND HEARING BY THE WORD OF GOD. THAT FORMULA WORKS IN REVERSE TOO. IF WHAT A PERSON HEARS IS NOT THE WORD OF GOD — IF IT IS DENOMINATIONAL TRADITION, FAMILY HABIT, CULTURAL ASSUMPTION, OR PERSONAL FEELING — THEN WHAT THEY DEVELOP IS NOT THE FAITH THE NEW TESTAMENT DESCRIBES. IT IS SOMETHING THAT RESEMBLES FAITH, THAT FEELS LIKE FAITH, THAT THE PERSON IS COMPLETELY SINCERE ABOUT — BUT THAT WAS BUILT ON A DIFFERENT FOUNDATION.

This is why the religious world is so divided. It is not primarily a sincerity problem. Most people in most religious traditions are genuinely sincere. The division exists because people are hearing different things. Ten people reading ten different manuals for the same car will arrive at ten different common sense understandings of how that car works. Some of those understandings will be partially right. Some will be significantly wrong. And the car does not care about their sincerity. It works the way it was designed to work, and the only way to understand that correctly is to go back to the original manual that came from the person who designed it.

EPHESIANS 4:4–6 ESTABLISHES THAT THERE IS ONE LORD, ONE FAITH, ONE BAPTISM. ONE. NOT A SPECTRUM OF EQUALLY VALID UNDERSTANDINGS. ONE. WHICH MEANS THAT THE GOAL OF THIS SERIES IS NOT TO ADD ONE MORE VOICE TO THE CHORUS OF COMPETING RELIGIOUS OPINIONS. IT IS TO GO BACK TO THE ORIGINAL SOURCE — THE WORD OF GOD, THE MANUAL THAT CAME FROM THE ARCHITECT — AND LET IT SPEAK WITHOUT THE FILTER OF TRADITION, CULTURE, OR ASSUMPTION.

KEY TRUTH

Inconsistent input produces inconsistent understanding, and inconsistent understanding produces division. Romans 10:17 establishes that genuine faith is produced by one specific source: the Word of God. Everything else produces something that may feel like faith but was built on a different foundation.

The Warning Jesus Already Gave — Matthew 15:8–9

MATTHEW 15:8–9 RECORDS JESUS ADDRESSING A GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO WERE DEEPLY SINCERE ABOUT THEIR RELIGION, WHO ATTENDED WORSHIP FAITHFULLY, WHO KNEW THEIR TRADITIONS INSIDE AND OUT, AND WHO GENUINELY BELIEVED THEY WERE HONORING GOD. HIS ASSESSMENT: IN VAIN THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE COMMANDMENTS OF MEN. VAIN — EMPTY, UNACCEPTABLE, WORTHLESS BEFORE GOD — NOT BECAUSE THEY WERE INSINCERE, BUT BECAUSE WHAT THEY HAD LEARNED AND WERE TEACHING CAME FROM HUMAN TRADITION RATHER THAN DIVINE REVELATION.

That warning is not limited to the first century. It applies to every person in every generation who has inherited a religious tradition and assumed, without examination, that what they inherited is the same as what the Word of God actually says. The remedy Jesus offered was not try harder or be more sincere. The remedy was to return to the actual Word of God and let it govern without human addition or substitution.

● VISUAL ANCHOR — THE FACTORY RESET

Think about what happens when a device has been running for a long time with corrupted data, bad downloads, and accumulated errors. It starts behaving in ways that seem normal to the user — because the user has adapted to the errors. They have compensated for the glitches. The problems feel like features. The only way to truly fix it is a factory reset — wiping everything back to the original state the manufacturer intended and starting fresh from the clean source. This series is a factory reset for your understanding of spiritual things. Not a deletion of everything you have ever learned. A return to the Original Source — the Word of God as it was first delivered, before centuries of human tradition, denominational addition, and cultural filtering accumulated on top of it. By the end of Lesson 12, you will have a common sense about God, salvation, baptism, and the church that was built from the same source the apostles used. That is the only common sense worth having.

Part 3 — Causing Understanding What This Series Is Going to Do

The twelve lessons that follow this one are not going to ask you to abandon everything you have ever believed. They are going to ask you to do something harder: to examine what you believe against the actual Word of God, with honesty and without defensiveness, and to follow the Word wherever it leads even if it goes somewhere you did not expect.

That requires a specific kind of courage — the courage to admit that your common sense might be wrong. Not because you are a bad person. Not because you were raised badly. But because the data that formed your understanding may have come from a source other than the Word of God, and Proverbs 14:12 already warned you what happens when a way that seems right leads somewhere it should not.

ROMANS 10:17 TELLS YOU EXACTLY WHAT TO DO: HEAR THE WORD OF GOD. THAT IS WHAT THESE LESSONS ARE DESIGNED TO GIVE YOU. NOT ONE MORE OPINION. NOT A NEW DENOMINATION. NOT A NEW TRADITION TO REPLACE THE OLD ONE. THE WORD — READ DISTINCTLY, GIVEN ITS PLAIN SENSE, APPLIED HONESTLY TO YOUR LIFE. THAT IS THE NEHEMIAH 8:8 PROMISE. THAT IS THE PHILIP-ALONGSIDE-YOU COMMITMENT. AND THAT IS WHAT LESSON 1 WILL BEGIN TO DELIVER, IF YOU ARE WILLING TO APPROACH IT WITH THE HONESTY THIS LESSON IS ASKING FOR.

Are You Ready for the Reset?

Before you move to Lesson 1, this lesson asks you to make one honest decision: are you willing to let the Word of God be the final authority over what you believe, even if it contradicts what you were raised to believe, what feels most comfortable, or what the people around you accept as obvious? That decision does not cost you anything yet. But it is the posture that makes everything that follows genuinely useful. A person who approaches the next twelve lessons with their assumptions firmly locked in place will read them and see confirmation of what they already thought. A person who approaches them with honest, open ears will hear something that could permanently change the direction of their life.

✦ STOP AND REFLECT

Lesson 1 begins with the Authority of Scripture — why the Word of God is the only Standard that never moves. Before you read it, ask yourself this: if the Word of God told you something that contradicted your most comfortable religious assumption, are you actually willing to follow the Word? If the answer is yes, you are ready. If the answer is I think so, that honesty is exactly where you need to start. Turn the page.

Supporting Scriptures

PROVERBS 14:12 (NKJV)

"There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death."

ACTS 17:11 (NKJV)

"These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so."

ISAIAH 55:8–9 (NKJV)

"For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts."

JEREMIAH 17:9 (NKJV)

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?"

Reflection Questions

Take your time. This lesson requires a kind of honesty that most people never apply to their own spiritual assumptions.

Where did your current beliefs about God, salvation, baptism, and the church actually come from? Can you trace each one back to a specific Scripture that you personally studied and understood — or did most of them come from the people and traditions around you?

Romans 10:17 says faith comes by hearing the Word of God. If genuine faith is produced by the Word, and what you have been hearing has been primarily tradition, culture, or denominational teaching — what does that tell you about the foundation of your current beliefs?

Matthew 15:8–9 says that worship governed by human commandments rather than divine revelation is vain before God — even when the worshippers are sincere. Is there any part of your current religious practice that you cannot find a direct basis for in the Scripture? What would you do if you found that there was not one?

Proverbs 14:12 says there is a way that seems right to a man but leads to death. The feeling of certainty is not the same as accuracy. What is one spiritual belief you currently hold that feels completely obvious and right — and have you ever seriously examined whether it is actually based on the Word of God?

Are you willing to let the Word of God be the final authority over what you believe, even if it contradicts what you were raised to believe? Not willing in theory — actually willing. What would it cost you to follow the Word wherever it leads? And is that cost worth paying?
